Athens is one of the simpler European capitals to plan, because a single ticket covers most of the archaeology and almost nothing else requires advance booking.
The combined ticket
A multi-site ticket covers the Acropolis plus six other archaeological sites: the Ancient Agora, the Roman Agora, Hadrian's Library, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Kerameikos and Aristotle's Lyceum.
It is valid across several days and costs considerably less than separate entries. Most visitors buy an Acropolis ticket alone and then pay again at each site.
Buy it at a quieter site — the Temple of Olympian Zeus or Kerameikos usually have no queue — and use it at the Acropolis afterwards.
Acropolis timing
At opening, around 8am, or the last two hours before closing.
By 11am in summer the rock is crowded and extremely hot, with almost no shade and marble worn slippery by millions of feet. Booking a timed slot online avoids the ticket queue.
The Acropolis Museum is the afternoon companion — air conditioned, and the top floor displays the Parthenon frieze in the original layout with visible gaps where the removed sections would sit.
What needs no booking
The National Archaeological Museum, which holds the Mycenaean gold, the Antikythera mechanism and the bronze Poseidon, and is the best museum in the country. Rarely queues.
Filopappou Hill, free, with the best view of the Acropolis — better than Lykavittos, because from Filopappou the Acropolis is in the picture.

Cape Sounion at sunset — the Temple of Poseidon on a cliff above the sea — is the easiest and is reachable by public bus.
Delphi is three hours each way, which makes an independent day trip tight. A tour handles the timing and adds interpretation at a site where the layout genuinely needs explaining. An overnight in Delphi is better if you have the day.
Meteora is not a day trip from Athens despite being sold as one — four hours by train each way. Take the overnight version.
Practical
Ferries to the islands leave from Piraeus, 30 minutes by metro from the centre. Book July and August ahead; other months a day or two out is fine.
Never plan a ferry back on the morning of your flight home — the meltemi wind cancels sailings in summer.
Eating times run late: lunch 2–4pm, dinner from 9. A taverna serving at 7 is serving tourists.
Athens in August is very hot and many Athenians leave. May, June, September and October are the good months.
