Singapore is 50 kilometres across, entirely English-signposted, and covered by an MRT that reaches almost everything in twenty to thirty minutes. That makes organised touring largely unnecessary.
Where guiding actually helps
Food. This is the one genuine case. Singapore's cuisine is Chinese, Malay, Indian and Peranakan layered together, and a hawker centre tour explaining what to order — and which stall in a hall of a hundred — is useful on a first visit.
Hawker culture is UNESCO-listed and the centres are the best value eating in one of the world's most expensive cities: a full meal for S$4–8 against S$25 or more in a restaurant.
Maxwell, Old Airport Road, Tiong Bahru, Chinatown Complex and Lau Pa Sat are the well-known ones. Look for the longest queue of office workers.
A Peranakan heritage walk in Katong or Joo Chiat, if the Straits Chinese culture interests you — the shophouse architecture and the food tradition are specific and not obvious.

Singapore rarely has the capacity crises that European sites do — most things can be bought on the day.
What is free
Gardens by the Bay's outdoor gardens and the Supertree Grove, including the light show in the evening. Only the conservatories and the skyway are ticketed.
The Botanic Gardens, a UNESCO site, free except the orchid garden.
The Marina Bay waterfront loop and the Helix Bridge.
Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam on foot — three distinct districts within a few MRT stops.
The Southern Ridges walk, a series of connected parks and elevated walkways.
Pulau Ubin, a rustic island ten minutes by bumboat from Changi Point, where you rent a bicycle and see what Singapore looked like fifty years ago.
The cost picture
Singapore is expensive in exactly two categories: accommodation and alcohol.
A beer in a bar is S$12–18. A hotel room is genuinely costly by regional standards.
Everything else is reasonable. Hawker food is cheap, the MRT is a few dollars a day, and a large share of the good things are free.
Budget for an expensive bed and inexpensive days rather than assuming the whole trip prices like the Marina Bay hotels.
Practical
Get an EZ-Link card or use contactless directly on the MRT and buses.
The airport is worth arriving early for — Jewel's indoor waterfall and gardens are on the public side and are a genuine attraction rather than an airport amenity.
Rules are enforced. No eating or drinking on the MRT, no littering, and chewing gum import restrictions are real. Fines are issued.
Climate: hot and humid year round with afternoon thunderstorms, and no real seasons. There is no better month, which at least simplifies planning.
